How We Calculate Milk Intake
The calculator estimates a daily intake range in milliliters based on weight and age, then divides that range by the number of feedings entered to estimate a per-feeding range.
Daily intake formula
Daily intake = weight in kilograms x age-based ml/kg/day range
Per-feeding intake = daily intake range / feedings per day
Unit conversions
1 pound = 0.453592 kilograms
1 fluid ounce = 29.5735 milliliters
Age Bands Used by the Calculator
- 0-2 months: 150-180 ml/kg/day
- 2-6 months: 120-150 ml/kg/day
- 6-12 months: 100-120 ml/kg/day
- 12+ months: 90-110 ml/kg/day
Inputs and Outputs
The tool accepts weight in pounds and ounces or kilograms, age in months and weeks, and the number of feedings in a 24-hour period. It returns a daily intake range and a per-feeding range in both ounces and milliliters.
What the Calculator Does Not Do
The calculator does not diagnose feeding problems or replace a clinician's plan. It is not designed for premature infants, medically complex infants, dehydration, acute illness, or situations where a pediatrician has already given a specific feeding target.
When to Use the Guides Instead
Use the calculator when you need a quick weight-based estimate. Use the guides when the question is about newborn timelines, hunger cues, solids, or whether a baby appears to be eating enough.
